Siting Liang and Ilira Troshani from the IML department participated in the „Spring School on ‘Knowledge Infusion and Extraction for Explainable Medical Artificial Intelligence“ that was held from 28 February to 2 March 2022 in Günzburg. It was targeted at master and early PhD students in the field of artificial intelligence to instigate discussion on the applications and challenges of AI methods in medicine, focusing not only on methods, but extending the discussion to ethical issues in the medical field.
Experts from different European research centers presented talks ranging from medical image computing to explainable AI. Of particular interest were the talks by Mennatallah EI-Assady from the AI Center of ETH Zürich, which focused on the challenges and advances in visual, interactive and explainable AI, and by Prof. Lena Maier-Hein from the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, who presented her research on intelligent systems for cancer care. Both talks are highly relevant for our work in the on-going XAINES and pAItient projects. One important goal of the KEMAI Spring School was to inspire more female researchers to pursue academic careers in AI. There was a women-only day where female students were given the opportunity to speak out about their difficulties in research and share their experiences with other female experts.
