As one of the special agencies in the United Nations with 193 Member States, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has a Standing Committee on the Law of Patents (SCP) located in Geneva, Switzerland. Prof. Sonntag has been invited as an AI technology expert, together with Prof. Urbanke (EPFL) and Prof. Chesterman (NUS).
Among many other topics, the SCP has been discussing the topic of patents and AI since 2019. During the 35th session of the SCP held from October 16 to 20, 2023, the Committee heard from technical experts who updated the delegates on the state of play regarding AI generated inventions, including AI’s technical capabilities and AI applications. These presentations by the AI technology experts (simultaneously interpreted into 20 languages) have informed the Committee’s discussion on AI and inventorship under patent law. DFKI’s Ophthalmo-AI project has been presented, too. Follow-up in-depth consultations by these AI technology experts are being planned for 2024.
