On 21 and 22 August 2025, the GROWMORROW FESTIVAL 2025 took place in Oldenburg. Once again, the festival focused on the central question of how to create a sustainable future. Across several stages, experts from science, business and society discussed technological and social developments -covering topics such as artificial intelligence, energy, health, nutrition, construction and climate change.

On the IQON stage, supported by the Centre for Co-Innovation in Oldenburg (IQON), our senior researcher Dr. Thiago Gouvêa and his MAP colleagues Dr. Frederic Stahl (head of MAP), Dr. Christoph Tholen (deputy head of MAP) as well as Janina Schneider (researcher MAP) joined a panel on “Green intelligence: Using AI to achieve a sustainable future.” After a short introduction of DFKI and the two Oldenburger research departments, the interview focused on projects for a sustainable future.

Dr. Thiago Gouvêa highlighted the work on AI tools that help ecologists in monitoring biodiversity more effectively. He looked back on a recent achievement – contributing to a top-3 finish in the XPRIZE Rainforest competition, where his team developed systems capable of assessing species diversity from acoustic data in just 72 hours.
