From 3rd to 5th June 2025 the 5th Helmholtz AI conference 2025 took place in Karlsruhe. The Helmholtz AI Conference is an annual event focusing on AI in science and research, featuring leading experts discussing advancements and their potential across various fields. Our senior researcher and CST group leader, Dr. Thiago Gouvêa showcased a poster titled “Bridging Automation and Expert Oversight: A Human-in-the-Loop Approach to Coral Morphology“.

As part of the Coral project, which is a collaboration between marine biologists at HIFMB, the Interactive Machine Learning Group at DFKI and the department of Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI) at the University of Oldenburg, a new tool that helps scientists analyse coral morphology more efficiently is being developped. The system combines state of the art computer vision techniques for image analysis with interactive machine learning to support the semi-automated identification and measurement of coral features from photographs and 3D CT scans.

The project aims to support coral research to ultimately help to manage and protect vulnerable reef ecosystems.
